Finding Peace in God's Sovereignty

We have all heard someone say to us, "Don't worry, God is sovereign," but what does that even mean? How can we have peace knowing that He is sovereign over our lives? Let's start by taking a look at who God is.

God is our Father. He is holding every circumstance, trouble, and loss in His hands. Job 12:10 says, "In his hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind." You are safe in the palms of His hands. What a wonderful thing for us to remember as Christians as we walk through this life!

Does that mean we will never go through trials? I think we can very clearly see in the book of Job that God uses all things for His glory and our good. We need to remember that when bad things happen in this life, we should not question God's sovereignty. God did not cause the bad thing, though He allowed it. But we can have peace knowing that "For those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28.

The Bible has much to say about how trials have meaningful purpose as He tests our patience in our sufferings. He is molding us, and shaping us. Making us more like Jesus. Sometimes, we will not have immediate answers as to why He had to let this bad thing happen. And in those moments we have only to, "Be still, and know that I am God." Psalm 46:10. We find peace knowing that God is present in our trials. We are NEVER alone. "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit." Psalm 34:18

We are also reminded by Paul in Romans 5:3-5  "Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us."

David was also no stranger to the peace we find in God's power and control of all things when in Psalm 23 he said "The Lord is my shepherd" and likened us as His sheep, "that leads us to still waters, green pastures and restores our soul." and that even when we "walk through the valley of the shadow of death" we need not fear evil for, He is with us." In this message we see that God is not keeping David from the hard times, but comforting him that He will be with him during the hard times. This is where we find our peace. In knowing that our Shepherd is with us through it all.

To conclude todays devotional, we can walk through life knowing that:

  • God is holding us in the palms of His hands
  • God is sovereign over every aspect of our lives
  • Through our sufferings He is molding and shaping us into being more like Him
  • He is testing us through hard times
  • He is present in our troubles

In all this we see a loving Father, who cares for His own! What a beautiful thing that by knowing these precious truths, we can have peace. Praise the Lord!
