Have you ever heard the phrase "guard your heart," but never truly understood what it meant or how to apply it? I know I have. Today, we are going to talk about what guarding our hearts looks like in our lives.

Let's take a look at what Proverbs 4:23 says,

"Keep your heart with all vigilance,
For from it flow the springs of life."

The Bible is telling us to be very careful of what we are filling our hearts with. Vigilance means to be aware. To be mindful. What goes in, will come out. If we fill it with goodness, that's what it will give. If we fill it with sinful things, then eventually we will start to do things that do not please God.

How can we be vigilant?

Well the question we need to ask ourselves is,

"Day to day, what am I filling my mind with?"

The music you listen to, what you read, watch, who you hang out with affects your hearts desires.

A year ago, I really struggled with anxiety, wanting to desire the things of Jesus, so I started feeding myself with biblical, God glorifying things.

And guess what?

My anxiety went away, and I started to yearn for the Bible, and for Christ.

Proverbs 7:25 says,

"Let not your heart turn aside to her ways; do not stray into her paths,"

We should keep our hearts from the sinful and wicked ways of this world. Do the people, music, movies, or books that you expose yourself to encourage sin, or Jesus?

Philippians 4:8 says,

"Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things."

We are to focus on the things of God. We are not to focus on the world. When you meditate on the truths of Christ, it changes everything. It changes your thoughts, and actions.

To close todays devotional, how can we guard our hearts this week? Is there anything in our lives keeping us from doing that? Praise God that His truths protect us from the wicked temptations of this word.
