Using Our Time Well

We have all had those moments where we are sitting down, having nothing to do, so we pull out our phone or turn the television on to entertain us. But the Bible actually calls us to do something different...and that's what we are going to talk about today. What does the Bible call us to do with our time? Let's get into it.

Ephesians 5:15-16 says,

"Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of your time, because the days are evil."

Paul is saying here that we should avoid living like unwise people, not to live as if there is no end to our lives. We should reflect carefully on how we use our time because idleness (doing nothing and not living your life with purpose) can lead to temptations and uselessness.

James 4:14 says,

"yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes."

James is saying here that we do not know what the future holds. Only God knows. Life is short. Our time here ends quickly. Therefore, we should use our time on this earth to bring glory to God in all that we do through usefulness, acts of service and sharing the message of Jesus Christ so that we are fulfilling God's purpose for our lives.

Psalm 90:12 says,

"So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom."

Numbering our days is so important because life is like a vapor in the wind. We need to spend our time glorifying God instead of scrolling on our phones or watching TV all day. We could die tomorrow, or the next. What will we have done with our time?

What should we do with our time when we have nothing to do?

Glorify God. That is God's will for us. That we may glorify Him through everything we do. Being on our phones/TVs for hours at a time is not glorifying God. Is it wrong to do those things? Not necessarily. But it's important that we step back and check our hearts to see how much time we are spending on them. Are we entertaining our minds with things that Christ died for? Also, how big of a priority are we making those things in our lives? We should be in the Word more, and using the precious time we have to pray and worship. By doing so, we equip ourselves with the abilities to share the Gospel, help others in need around us and become a sharpened tool for the Kingdom!

To tie a bow on todays devotional, how are we spending our time? Are we using it just as the Bible calls us to, or are we wasting it? Let us all remember to count our days, and to use it all for God's glory.
