Most of us have gone in front of the mirror, stood there, examined how we looked, and thought, "I hate how I look," or "Why can't I look like ____?" I've been there too. It's awful, it hurts, but guess what? There is a solution to this.
God looks at us so much different than how we look at ourselves. He looks at us as His sons and daughters, but also created in His image. We hear that and probably think, "yes, yes, I've heard this a thousand times." And I have too! But today, we are going to look at what that means, and how we can see ourselves beautifully and wonderfully made in God's image.
God has made us to reflect His image, character, intellect, and relationships.
Genesis 1:27 says,
"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them."
We have been made in the likeliness of Him. You and me have been uniquely created. Our hair, feet, hands, facial features, etc. were already planned out by God before time began.
Psalm 139:13-14 says,
"For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well."
What a beautiful truth, that when we were being formed in our mothers womb, our Father was doing that. He knew the person He was creating was absolutely beautiful.
1 Samuel 16:7 says,
"...For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart."
It is so important for all of us to remember that true beauty is on the inside. God does not look for beauty on the outside. He looks at the heart. He looks to see if you love Him, praise Him, glorify Him. The world will tell you lies that you need to wear these type of clothes, or wear this type of makeup to look good. But all of those things will fade away. In the end, all that will really matter is the heart. Did you and I put our faith in Jesus, love Him, trust Him, and serve Him? Or did we only care about what the people around us thought of how we appeared to be?
To close this devotional, we are fearfully and wonderfully made. Not because man says so, but because God made us in His image, which is beautiful. We don't have to look in the mirror anymore and think that we are ugly, because we are His chosen! We can have joy and peace knowing that what God sees is more important than what our friends and family see.
