You’ve probably heard people say, “You are enough!” And while many will say this to help people feel encouraged, strong or capable… in all reality, we are not enough. For true strength and encouragement does not start with you and me, but rather through Jesus and His Word! He is the only one who can make us truly happy, content, and strong. He is everything we need. Our identity is in Christ alone. So let's talk about what it looks like to have our identity in our Savior.
The Bible says that we are a new creation. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says,
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come."
You are not your old self anymore. Once you are saved, you are a whole new person on the inside! This is something to remind ourselves when we start listening to the temptations of this world.
We are also God's masterpiece. Ephesians 2:10 says,
"For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them."
Good works. We are created in Christ Jesus for good works. We are to walk in righteousness.
We are also dead to our old sinful life and resurrected. Galatians 2:20 says,
"I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."
We are not alone in our fight against sin, but Christ now lives in us through the Holy Spirit. When we are tempted to sin, but we decide not to, that is evidence of Jesus in our life.
The Bible says that we are adopted children. Ephesians 1:5 says,
"he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will,"
Through Christ’s sacrifice, we are no longer separated from God because of our sin. We are His children, adopted into the family of God! We don't have to feel alone, because He is our Father.
We are loved. Ephesians 2:4-5 says,
“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved"
What a beautiful reality, that even though we have sinned against Him, He still loves, forgives, cares, protects, and dwells within us.
We are chosen and set apart. 1 Peter 2:9 says,
"But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light."
We are here to glorify Christ. That is our goal here on this earth. To spread the gospel, proclaim His name and through these things bring Him glory.
And lastly, we are complete. Colossians 2:10 says,
"and you have been made complete in Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority.”
…and John 1:16 says,
“For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.”
We have total satisfaction in Him instead of careers, relationships, material possessions, etc. God sees us as righteous as Christ because of what Jesus did on the cross. Our completeness is not based on our daily good works but on the work that Jesus did on our behalf.
To close this devotional, our identity is not in the fact that we are strong and capable, but it is in Christ - what He has done in us. We are not enough or worthy, but Jesus is. We are weak, but He is strong. We are complete in Him. Praise God!
