Have you ever asked yourself if your friendships are godly friendships? Do you build one another up? Do you love one another as Christ loved you? Do you sharpen one another (Proverbs 27:17)? Today, we are going to take a look at what a godly friendship is. So let's dive in!
First, the Bible says that a godly friendship is one that loves one another with sacrificial love. John 15:13 says,
"Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends."
We are supposed to put their welfare above ours. Making their needs more important than our needs. Sacrificing our pride, wants, and everything for them.
Then the Bible says that godly friendships stick together through adversity, not just during the good times. Proverbs 17:17 says,
"A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity."
Do you stick together through the trials that both of you go through? Or do you end the friendship, giving up? The challenging moments that we have make our friendships stronger.
Also, honesty and mutual accountability are very important. Proverbs 27:6 says,
"Faithful are the wounds of a friend; profuse are the kisses of an enemy."
A godly friendship speaks truth to one another, even when it hurts, so that we can help each other with spiritual growth. When our friend is doing something that is not pleasing to the Lord, we are to let them know so that they can turn from it.
We are to bear one another's burdens. Galatians 6:2 says,
"Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ."
Burdens cannot be carried alone, so come alongside them, and be with them through the trial they are facing by praying with them, crying with them, and talking to them.
The Bible also calls us to forgive one another. Colossians 3:13 says,
"bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive."
Forgive your friends. Have grace towards them. This is what God calls us to do.
To tie a bow on this devotional, do your friendships look like this, or do they encourage sin? Do you forgive one another? Do you sacrifice your pride, and wants for them? Do you speak truth to them? Do you bear one another's burdens? All of these questions are so very important to ask ourselves as we walk throughout this life. Let us remind ourselves every day to be the friend that Jesus calls us to be.
