What Does Jeremiah 29:11 Mean?

Jeremiah 29:11 is a beautiful verse, and many people tend to apply it to themselves. But it does not extend to us. And today, I'm here to tell you why.

At the time that Jeremiah was writing this, Jerusalem was in great danger. Their home had gotten destroyed by Babylon, and it forcibly relocated the Israelites. They became confused, discouraged, and felt that God had abandoned them. False prophets were telling them that their captivity would end quickly, and that's when God sent Jeremiah to deliver a letter saying the complete opposite: the exile would last 70 years.

Jeremiah 29:11 says,

"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope."

God was telling them that their suffering had a purpose, and a redemptive end. Plans for welfare. This was for them. Not for us. God has a purpose and a future for His children, but it's not always full of welfare. Sometimes, we have to face trials just like these Israelites had to.

But in our suffering, God has a plan and a purpose. We don't always have the answers. We don't know what our future might bring, so that is why we have to cling to His Truth, knowing that He allows suffering to happen for our eternal good and for His glory.

Romans 8:28 says,

"And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose."

There is hope in our suffering because God will use it. He will use it in so many ways. Even if it's being more like Jesus, or God answering a prayer.

We are not promised prosperity. We are actually promised the opposite.

Philippians 1:29 says,

"For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake,"

It's scary. It's tough to hear. But there is good news! Jesus is walking with you through it. Even though we are not promised welfare in this life, we can rest knowing that Jesus uses our suffering for our good and His glory. That He is holding our hand through this walk with Him.

Come get your faith in 5.
